Georgia Earth and Environmental Science Educator's Institute: Connecting Models and Evidence
Join us June 7-9, 2021 for an online workshop. The Earth and Environmental Science Educators' Institute provides professional development in the use of Model-Evidence Link (MEL) activities centered on current Earth science topics. These 3-dimensional (core ideas, practices, crosscutting concepts) instructional scaffolds facilitate critical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, construction of scientific explanations, and collaborative argumentation to support scientific reasoning within challenging Earth science topics. For more information about the use of MEL diagrams in the classroom, explore this website. This three-day institute is free and a stipend is provided! Applications are open to middle and high school Earth and Environmental Science teachers in Georgia. Pairs of teachers from the same school who teach the same subject are encouraged to apply. Those teaching Earth science content in their courses are also encouraged to apply.
COVID-19 Notice: While we do have every reason to expect vaccines will be widely available by this date and a more normal workshop experience to occur, please be advised that any COVID-19 precautions as recommended by the CDC or required by Forsyth County Schools will be implemented. At this time we expect a mask mandate to still be in place and you must agree to comply with all required precautions. The MEL project and Forsyth County Schools cannot be held accountable for any potential exposure. Therefore, if you are in a high-risk category and cannot be vaccinated, we would encourage you to wait to apply until 2022 when this workshop will be offered again.
Application Deadline: April 1, 2021. Applicants will be notified of a decision by April 10, 2021. Please contact Donna Governor (donna.governor@ung.edu) if you have questions.
The 2020 Summer Institute was cancelled due to COVID-19. We are now accepting applications for 2021.
