For the Instructor
These student materials complement the Coastal Processes, Hazards and Society Instructor Materials. If you would like your students to have access to the student materials, we suggest you either point them at the Student Version which omits the framing pages with information designed for faculty (and this box). Or you can download these pages in several formats that you can include in your course website or local Learning Managment System. In this step you will download the Monthly Tide Gauge Data Plot for Victoria, British Columbia and paste it into your PowerPoint file.
Downloading the Tide Gauge Data Plot
- First, you'll need to locate Victoria on the PSMSL viewer. British Columbia is located on the West Coast of Canada, just north of the border with the USA. Victoria is on the southernmost tip of Vancouver Island, about 100 km northwest of Seattle.
- Make sure you have selected "Series Length" in the Display options.
- Click on the white balloon marker over Victoria that indicates a dataset of 100+ years in length.
- Click on the "Other Information" tab in the pop-up window. Then click on "Documentation" under "Station Information".
- Click on the link to the larger image of the monthly data plot under "Tide Gauge Data" and save the .png file to your hard drive.
Preparing the PowerPoint File
- If you haven't done so already, download the blank PowerPoint file (PowerPoint 704kB Sep7 16). Save it to your hard drive, replacing "Lastname" in the file name with your own last name.
- Enter your name on the title slide where it says "Student Name".
- Go to the second slide of the PowerPoint file. It should say "Victoria, British Columbia, Canada" in the Title Line.
- Hold your mouse over the bottom left icon in the center of the large text box. A box should pop up that says "Insert Picture from File". Click here.
- Navigate to the data plot you saved in the previous steps. You should have called the file "Victoria.png". Select this file and click "Insert".
- Be sure to enter the appropriate citation information in the small text box below the plot. Click here for information on how to site PSMSL data.
- Save your work!
