Process and Methods
A total of 12 institutions completed an institutional snapshot (9 during Summer/Fall 2023 and 3 more during Fall 2024). The institutions consisted of 6 public institutions (with student enrollments between 12,000-89,000) and 6 private institutions (with student enrollments between 1,000-3,400). The institutions varied in geographical location across the United States.
Information Gathered
LT3 collectively created a snapshot template (Microsoft Word 2007 (.docx) 19kB Jun9 25) to gather a suite of self-similar information from each participating institutional team. The template asks questions related to:
- Institutional context
- Sources of evidence related to the three voices (student, peer, instructor) or other evidence
- Documents gathered to evaluate teaching for promotion and tenure
- How teaching, especially inclusive teaching, is defined and weighted in evaluations (e.g., P&T, annual reviews)
- Short-term and long-term goals for advancing the sources of evidence gathered at our institution
Representatives from each institution took turns presenting their institutional snapshot during our monthly meetings. The presentations provided an opportunity for each institution to delve deeply into their policies and practices and for other institutions to ask specific questions. Many institutions reported making recent changes to policies relevant to sources of evidence, including P&T guidelines, teaching evaluation more broadly, or recent adoption of an institute-wide definition of inclusive teaching. All institutions reported being unhappy with the sources of evidence their institution gathers to evaluate effective and inclusive teaching.
The group also created 8 repositories to collect documents referenced and linked in the institutional snapshots and to share external resources. The repositories hold individual forms or documents with information related to the specific sources of evidence being collected (e.g., an institution's student evaluation of teaching survey).
