Background Information

I teach Principles of Economics and American Economic History at the University of Richmond, Robins School of Business. My research is in economic history and the history of institutions,

I have used Team Based Learning in my principles of economics classes (micro and macro) for three semesters. The students apparently learn well in the TBL format, although I have no rigorous way of showing they do better than in my previous format, which was 75-80% lecture.

I have not conducted a systematic comparison of test scores, but of course that would not show anything conclusive, given the confounding variables.

To my surprise I found implementation much less problematic than anticipated. Much of the set up work was needed before the first semester. I enjoy working with students as they solve problems in the team format. In many instances they work well together, and progress through the semester as predicted in the TBL literature.

I continue to look for ways to improve, so I was delighted to be invited to be part of this project to develop better application problems.
