This is a three part science lesson plan for 1st graders in South Carolina focused on adaptations.
The lessons align with state standards, is rooted in nature-based learning, and teach the students that living things use body parts (like roots, shells, camouflage, or beaks) to meet their needs.
Lesson 1: Adaptation Hunt
Students explore an outdoor area to find examples of plant and animal adaptations. They work in small groups using a scavenger hunt sheet and discuss what they discover.
Lesson 2: How Humans Can Mimic Plants
In the classroom, students design their own human "adaptations" by drawing features that would help them survive in certain situations. They present and explain their ideas.
Lesson 3: Which Beak is Easier?
Students use different tools (like spoons, tweezers, or chopsticks) to simulate bird beaks and test which works best for different types of food. They discuss why certain designs work better.
Overall, the unit uses hands-on activities, discussion, and simple experiments to help young students understand how adaptations help living things survive and how humans can learn from nature.
