Dr. Burgin earned her Ph.D. in Zoology and Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior (EEBB) from Michigan State University (2007) and completed a postdoctoral training at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies (2007-2009) before beginning tenure-track positions at Wright State University (2009-2011) and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (2011-2015). She joined the University of Kansas in 2016. Her research focuses on how human activities alter biogeochemical cycles across aquatic ecosystems, including streams, rivers, lakes and wetlands. She also is the Project Director and lead PI for the NIH-funded 500 Nations Haskell – KU Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program, which places American Indian and Alaska Native students from Haskell Indian Nations University into research experiences at the University of Kansas. She has completed the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) Entering Research Facilitator Training and the ADVANCEGeo Inclusive Workplaces Training. She is a member of the KU Center for Undergraduate Research (CUR) Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Advisory Board and leads department-level DEI committees for the Environmental Studies Program and Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Department at KU. She was named 2019 Mentor of the Year by the KU Office of Diversity in Science Training.
