Vignettes are stand-alone, illustrated electronic case studies that teach about geomorphology, surface processes, and/or Quaternary history. Vignettes can be used alone or in combination with the "Key Concepts in Geomorphology", the first in a new generation of textbooks. Vignettes allow faculty to customize the learning resources they offer students to enrich and personalize student learning experiences.

The role of hydraulics in fine-grained sedimentation within river channels: an example from the Ovens River, Australia
Geoff Vietz
River channels contain sediment deposits such as bars and benches which provide important ecological habitat for fish, macroinvertebrates and riparian and aquatic vegetation. Bars and benches influence flow to ...

The Katahdin Esker
Roger Hooke
Introduction Many landforms left by continental ice sheets owe their origin to thermal conditions at the glacier bed. Among these are thrust features1 (Moran and others, 1980); periglacial landforms dating from ...

Width convergence in tide-dominated estuaries: the case of the Alligator Rivers, Northern Australia.
Gareth Davies
The Alligator Rivers region is situated in the southeast corner of Van Diemen Gulf, northern Australia (Figure 1). It contains some excellent examples of tide-dominated estuaries (Figure 2). An immediately obvious ...

Cosmogenic nuclide inventories of river sediments reveal the geomorphic character of their source areas
Alexandru T Codilean
The realization that surface processes can play a key role in moderating tectonics, and possibly climate (Molnar & England, 1990; Raymo & Ruddiman, 1992; see also Bishop 2007) has meant that there is now a ...

How is Everglades geomorphology like that of arid Australian rivers and boreal bogs?
Laurel Larsen, University of California-Berkeley
Clues from patternsGeormorphic patterns are interesting not just because of the sense of wonder they evoke, but because they provide evidence of a delicate balance created by feedback. If that feedback is ...

Natural tree death, forest harvest, changes in hillslope hydrology, and implications to slope stability
Adelaide vignette Johnson
Death of trees by either forest harvest or by natural forest decline may result in increases in soil saturation, flooding, and landslides. These geomorphic processes, potentially differing in frequency and ...

Soil-water-rock interactions II: The formation of tors in arid and semiarid environments
Mark Strudley
The prominence of bedrock edifices above essentially featureless, erosional pediment surfaces underscores the crux of the 'pediment problem' that has baffled geologists since 1877(described in the Part I ...

Flow in a microtidal channel during within-bank and over-bank tides: Yalimbah Creek, South Eastern Australia.
Gareth Davies
The study of tidal hydrodynamics plays an important role in geomorphic studies of tidal channels. While the hydrodynamic properties of the landform are largely controlled by its morphology, these flows also drive ...

Quantification of sediment storage and flux in an alpine basin (Reintal, Bavarian Alps, Germany)
Joachim Goetz; Martin Geilhausen
This vignette deals with the quantification of sediment storage and sediment input and exemplifies how sediment is transferred through an alpine catchment system (Reintal, Bavarian Alps). The Reintal valley is ...
