New Workshop - Teaching Computation with MATLAB (and GenAI)
Application Deadline: June 3rd
Free educator-led, in-person workshop - October 27-29, 2024
For the first time, the Teaching Computation with MATLAB workshop will have a Generative AI flavor. The workshops always pick up on the newest trends in STEM teaching - from flipped classrooms, to cloud tools, to online grading. The 2024 workshop will offer educators the opportunity to learn how MATLAB based courses can incorporate GenAI, or ChatGPT, as a teaching and learning tool. MathWorks staff and experienced educators will be on hand to share tools and experiences.
The workshop will be a mix of training sessions introducing teaching tools and brief talks by peers, with approximately half the workshop allocated to group breakouts, including dedicated work-time to develop and evolve your course curriculum. Conveners will develop the workshop program and working group make-up based on applicant interests and teaching focuses.
Workshop Goals
At the workshop, educators will
- Develop Curriculum: Upgrade curriculum with new computational content
- Work with Mentors: Participate in peer-to-peer coaching sessions
- Publish: Develop a teaching module to be hosted online (after a peer review), enabling reuse and citation
- Learn MATLAB teaching tools: Incorporate new tools--such as MATLAB Live Scripts, MATLAB Online, MATLAB AI Chat Playground (experimental), and MATLAB Onramp--to improve student learning and course effectiveness.
This workshop is a collaboration between MathWorks and the Science Education Resource Center (SERC) at Carleton College.

Here's what one 2023 participant had to say about the educator workshop:
I have more confidence about being able to use programming in my courses where students don't have a programming background. I used to worry that they would get distracted from the course material by worrying about having to program, but I think the programming tools will actually help them with the subject material.
Apply now to save your spot. Looking forward to your participation and meeting you at the workshop! If you have questions, feel free to contact me directly at lisak@mathworks.com.
