Introduction to the tasks/logistics. Jim Schwartz facilitating.
By the end of the Summit:
  • critique and complete penultimate draft of PKAL Guide to Pedagogies (Microsoft Word 166kB Sep18 08)
  • review and plan to complete pedagogical postings on the SERC web site at Carleton College
  • understand the scope and intent of the Handbook

1:20 - 2:00 PM
General comments on the draft Guide - brainstorming. Louise Hainline facilitating.
Questions - In a ~30 page Guide:
  • what are the most immediately relevant resources, materials, and data to include that will capture and sustain the interest of teams of agents of change and secure needed support?
  • If this Guide were to land on the desk of a senior administrator, a department chair, and early-career STEM faculty member, or a leader of a consortium, what should be included to catalyze the 'aha!' moment from which informed and persistent action would proceed?

Track 1

2:05 - 3:30 PM
Representatives of the project team and the collaborating partners meet to synthesize experience and expertise in building regional networks that work and can be sustained, with a focus on increasing the awareness and use of contemporary research-based STEM pedagogies withing the system/network/consortia. Looking toward the future.

Track 2

2:05 - 2:35 PM
Assigned working groups (five persons) make first cut critique of their first assigned section of the draft guide. Submit suggested edits on assigned section as Word document to the Summit website.

2:40 - 3:00 PM
Working groups report back on their progress/critique of the Guide.

6:00 - 7:15 PM
Dinner for all Summit and Workshop participants.

Track 1 (Project Team and Collaborating Partners)

Track 2 (Pedagogical Pioneers)

7:30 - 8:30 PM
A first examination of the Pedagogic Modules on the SERC website (Science Education Resource Center at Carleton College). Cathy Manduca, facilitating. We will explore one of the pedagogic modules with an eye for what we like, what we think could be improved, and what we think is missing. This discussion will set the stage for work by participants on modules addressing their pedagogy tomorrow. AND....a heads-up on the PP session at the workshop on Saturday morning: A fish-bowl responding to questions similar to those in the original survey: how to get started; what resources are needed; how to overcome common/systemic barriers to change; etc. Rules of engagement will be in place (everyone's voice is heard; no sermons; etc.) Judy Dilts is facilitating the fishbowl; about ten of the PP will have an
active role, and others can contribute as appropriate.

Saturday, September 20

8:45 - 9:45 AM
Welcome by Brenda Lyseng.
Fishbowl for the workshop session on pedagogical pioneering, with Judy Dilts moderating.

Developing the Pedagogic Modules
Participants will spend this time working on their own pedagogic modules and will produce

  • an improved module with more complete content
  • a set of suggestions for further improvements (word file uploaded to summit website before 12:00)

You are assigned to a team to facilitate this work. In addition, each team should consider the following questions in preparation for the 11:30 discussion:

  • What is the best approach to develop these materials as a companion to the Guide, as a site to inform "next-steps" to explore, adapt, implement and assess specific pedagogies of engagement?
  • What is the most efficient way to collect relevant materials and to develop this virtual/technology-driven resource that serves the larger community of PKAL collaborating partners?
  • What additional resources are needed (generically and specifically) to ensure success of pedagogies of engagement?

11:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Whole group discussion

  • Recommendations regarding modules, examples and other online materials to support faculty in implementing Pedagogies of Engagement
  • Thoughts regarding community processes for further developing these on-line materials
