Climate Justice, Life Expectancy, and Gender Disparities in Intermediate Algebra part of Curriculum for the Bioregion:Activities
After an introduction to climate justice and life expectancy, students complete a two-part project. For the first part of the project, students use life expectancy data and plots using the Cartesian coordinate system to make conclusions about the impact of climate change on health and longevity and to explore gender differences. For the second part of the project, students continue to practice math skills, and also practice math communication and build their math literacy, by engaging civically through conversation about the first part of their project, as well as how they can take action to support gender equity through family planning and education for women and girls as a way to address climate change.

Exploring Sea Level Rise in Algebra and Pre-Calculus: Learning About Affected Communities, Creating Mathematical Models, and Practicing Mathematical Communication Skills part of Curriculum for the Bioregion:Activities
Students begin this activity by learning how communities in Bangladesh are affected by melting glaciers and sea level rise, as well as why these phenomena are happening as a result of global climate change. They complete a modeling activity by collecting sea level height data from an interactive map, using linear regression to fit a mathematical model to the data, and reflecting on the accuracy of their model, as well as climate change models in general, by doing calculations with their regression equation. The activity ends when they present their models and have a conversation, with a person who is not a mathematician or familiar with mathematical models, about how models are sometimes misused to create an illusion of uncertainty about humankind's contribution to climate change.

Clothes Washers Life Cycle- Cost and Environmental Performance part of Curriculum for the Bioregion:Activities
Students in math and business classes work together in groups to evaluate and compare cost and environmental performance of different clothes washers.

Modeling Atmospheric CO2 Data part of Curriculum for the Bioregion:Activities
In this activity, students will use actual CO2 data from the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii to create their own "Keeling Curve"; conduct an analysis of the data; and, attempt to match it to a mathematical function. They will then use the function to predict increases in CO2, both historical and future.

Sustainability and Changing Rates of Change part of Curriculum for the Bioregion:Activities
To understand sustainability, students must understand rates of change. This activity includes a primer on basic rates concepts and an exercise that motivates critical thinking about rates of change and sustainability with an analysis of historical petroleum production rates data from the United States and the world.

Sound Science part of Curriculum for the Bioregion:Activities
An activity for a math/biology linked learning community in which students will collect, organize and analyze data related to the health of Puget Sound; experience the design of experiments in the sciences; apply mathematics to real biological issues that affect their lives; and develop an awareness of the personal and professional usefulness of mathematics, biology and modeling. Statistic students will act as consultants to the biology students and Biology students will in turn act as software analysts to help analyze trends as models are created.

In this lesson we review "Acids and Bases" taught in a previous lesson and, through a scientific method, will look at the impact of an acid on different types of shells. Students will reinforce previous learning of scientific principles including acids/basis and will develop a real experiment using the scientific method.

How Many Plants Make a Future? The Carbon Dioxide Challenge part of Curriculum for the Bioregion:Activities
This activity focuses on the role of photosynthesis in a sustainable future. Students explore the effect of photosynthesis and respiration in a 'closed systems' containing plankton, marine plants, and fish. By calculating carbon dioxide uptake and production in these systems, they predict a plant: animal ratio sufficient to maintain a system in carbon dioxide 'balance' for one hour.

Estimating Greenhouse Gas Offsets as Part of Shoreline Community College's Greenhouse Gas Inventory part of Curriculum for the Bioregion:Activities
This is a service-learning project for students in Geography 204 (Weather, Climate and Ecosystems). Students will assess prior estimates of carbon offsets associated with plant and soil biomass on their college campus; and as a result, they will understand the complexity of measuring the complex sources of carbon emissions and offsets; address the challenges of coordinating data collection and field measurement; and realize importance of estimation in public policy contexts.
