The emergence of generative AI models, such as ChatGPT in 2022, is impacting teaching and learning in ways we are only beginning to understand. Exploration of these changes is occurring across multiple scales—from popular media coverage and institutional initiatives to individual instructors developing new AI policies for their syllabi. A critical yet under-explored dimension is the disciplinary perspective.

How will these tools specifically reshape geoscience courses and teaching methods? To navigate this shift effectively, we need community-wide conversations with peers who share our commitment to developing essential geoscience skills and knowledge in our students.

In this webinar we will explore the current generative AI landscape as it relates to the work of geoscience educators. We will highlight some emerging practices and perspectives on the use of these tools by educators, especially in guiding their students to appropriate use. The webinar will include time for participants to share and hear from each other so we can start to build a collective understanding of the current landscape, both the challenges and opportunities.
