How can we leverage ideas from this workshop to build our in-person workshop this fall? Who else needs to be in the room?

Please add in your ideas for the in-person workshop and additional voices that should be included!

Does Scientific Ocean Drilling need a few well-placed social media influencers? What would that take? Who should they be? Should they be derived from the IODP community or derived from the communities that might like to be included in the flow of SOD information?

Is this line of inquiry something that should be prioritized heading into the in-person workshop?

(Sorry only questions here!)

Could we do surveys/focus groups of some of our target communities to get a better sense of how best to reach them with our outreach efforts? Could we ask questions to assess their attitudes towards science, what about the IODP they find most interesting/exciting that is most likely to get their attention, and what outreach approaches are they most likely to engage with? Or, if that research is already out there, could we have someone there who can lead a discussion about it?

One of my professors likes to talk about "big dogs." He's from Texas :). What if we were to find an influencer who wasn't in the science profession but who gets captivated by ocean drilling research? Anyone know someone famous?

How about podcasters? (I think I saw this idea either on another discussion board or it came up during the workshop). There are large podcasting conferences like Podcast Movement - could IODP scientists go there and be available for interviews from podcasters of all fields? Getting the message of the importance of ocean exploration on podcasts (science and non-science ones) would reach wider audiences. Maybe the person that organizes the AAAS Sci-Mic at their annual meeting each year would be helpful to have in the room? (or a non-scientist like someone from the Podcast Movement team or Edison Research who does alot of surveys/reports on the status of podcasting).

And libraries/librarians! Libraries are well respected, well established, in communities (and schools) everywhere and free access. Is there a program that can be done in libraries? Any interesting parallels that could be written up/shared between a core repository and a book repository - what libraries hold/share/educate, and the same with the facilities that hold the cores post-cruise?

Perhaps someone from AGI could also be at the in-person meeting. I know Earth Science Week has designated days for different sub-disciplines. Maybe scientific ocean drilling could have more of a spotlight during that week, or during the month of June (National Ocean Month - which is after universities have completed the semester, but still have K-12 schools in session for outreach programming).

I like the idea of making a connection between core "libraries" and book libraries. I think there's something there...
