What are effective mentoring strategies for graduate students, postdocs, and tenure-track faculty within scientific ocean drilling? How can we expand on effective mentoring, especially for those in historically marginalized groups in STEM?

Please post any further points for discussion, thoughts, ideas or resources

After the workshop, I've been thinking about the question of how can we attract more graduate students, postdocs, and TT faculty from under-represented and historically marginalized universities to participate in IDOP?

From my own personal experience as a PhD student that got to sail, I wouldn't have applied to sail without the support and guidance of great mentors—I was lucky to be in a university with several sea-going professors. This is where I see a challenge for some of the marginalized groups in universities/colleges that don't have much access to people with IODP/sea-going experience.

One idea can be to create a database/website with the name of volunteers that are willing to "virtually" mentor students, postdocs, and faculty interested in applying to sail but that may be intimidated by the process. Although the pre-expedition webinars provides some information about the application, I feel the webinar does not offer a lot of guidance for the actual application process—specially for first timers.

Interested in hearing other thoughts and opinions.

Sebastian
