Quantifying Hydrologic Observations

This material was originally created for On the Cutting Edge: Professional Development for Geoscience Faculty
and is replicated here as part of the SERC Pedagogic Service.

Alicia Wilson, University of South Carolina
Course: Surface and near-surface processes (Geomorphology and Hydrology)

Presenting students with a realistic problem-solving task draws them in.

The Activity

Students in small groups have to agree on

  • how do you report the amount of water from a rainstorm, and
  • how do you report the amount of water that flows from a river into the ocean.
It is a warm up for later in the semester.
