Part 2—Download Tools and Data

Step 1 Download and Install the isee PLAYER

Go to the isee systems website, download the free player for your operating system, and install it.

Step 2 Download, Unzip, and Open the Biomass Accumulation Model

  1. Create a folder named "Carbon Forests" or something similar where you can download and store the files necessary for this chapter.
  2. Download the file: BiomassAccumulation2.7.zip (Zip Archive 581kB Jan3 09) by right-clicking on a PC or ctrl-clicking on a Mac.
  3. Unzip the downloaded file to either the desktop or your Carbon Forests folder. When the file is unzipped, a folder called Biomass Accumulation2.7 will be created. This folder will in turn contain two folders: a Graphics folder and a Links folder plus the model, Biomass Accumulation2.7.STM.
If you move the Biomass Accumulation2.7 folder, just make sure that all of its contents stay within it. The Biomass Accumulation2.7.STM model will not run properly if it is not kept at the same level as the Graphics and Links folders.
  4. To check if the file unzipped correctly, start the isee PLAYER application, select File > Open and navigate to Biomass Accumulation2.7.STM. When the model opens, the Welcome page appears with two buttons at the bottom: Read About this Model and Model Inputs. If you see this screen you know that your files have successfully unzipped and you can quit the isee PLAYER for now.

Step 3 Download FIA State Carbon Summary Data and a Carbon Scenario Template

  1. Right-click (PC) or control-click (Mac) to download the file: FIA_State_Carbon.xls (Excel 638kB Feb14 09).
This data was collected by the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program of the U.S. Forest Service. The data file contains six tables of information summarized by region and by state, including: forest area by land class and by forest type; total carbon stock and annual changes by forest type; component; owner; and land-use change.
  2. Right-click (PC) or control-click (Mac) to download the file: Carbon_Scenario_Template.xls (Excel 79kB Feb14 09) by .
This Excel spreadsheet is a template that allows for comparing the FIA data to model runs.
  3. Place both Excel files into your Carbon Forests folder.
