Short answer, probably not. Longer answer, maybe with some thought and creativity. We have all been wrestling with students using AI for assignments and exams, where its use and abuse have become ubiquitous. If you ask ChatGPT how to design questions or assignments that it cannot answer, it will tell you to ask about personal student experiences or course-specific data and concepts. This advice is the motivation for the following assignments I have used that have resulted in what I think are authentic student responses.

The prime example is for the student to answer 3 reflection questions at the end of the semester, as extra credit. The depth and insight of some of the responses is impressive and enlightening. This has been used for face-to-face and asynchronous online classes. Other examples include: a short answer question on exams where the student is asked to critique an incomplete or incorrect response from ChatGPT, a lab class studying samples from a mastodont excavation, the Lifestyle project, an oil exploration game, a groundwater consulting activity, weekly reflection discussions, and an Environmental Site Assessment. These have resulted in some incredibly original, insightful and motivational reflections from the students. Resources and results will be provided
