Mineralogy Guess Who?: Engaging students in learning and research through the development of game-based learning tools

The geosciences is no stranger to active learning, engaging the general public and college students alike with field experiences, hands-on activities, and lively discussions. The challenge remains in the efficacy and transferability of a learning concept. An intimate connection between a learning mechanic and learning concept is apt to yield deeper, more transferable learning. To that effect, we explore various game mechanics as tools for exciting and engaging learners on geoscience topics, specifically mineralogy. For example, Mineralogy Guess Who? was initiated as an undergraduate student term project and has been expanded into an undergraduate research project. As the designers, we have created different game boards to align with different learning concepts, including mineral classification; silicate subclassification; crystal form, habit and cleavage; and symmetry. Through this share-a-thon, we hope to finalize our survey tool and institutional review board (IRB) proposal to initiate our efficacy testing in Fall 2026. We are particularly eager to engage with colleagues interested in bringing our game into the hands of their Geology 101 students, as well as their Mineralogy and Petrology students.
