Demonstration
This is a set of 10 discussion assignments for an online (asynchronous) introductory general geology course and some additional discussion activities for a face-to-face course on natural disasters. For the online course, each assignment has students answer a few prompts for their original post and then reply to another student's post in a way that goes beyond simply agreeing with what the original poster said. Some assignments require students to first watch a youtube video on a class topic (each less than 20 minutes in length) to inform their original post. These assignments have rubrics for ease of assessment. For the face-to-face course, the activities are of two types: (1) prompts for simple small group discussions and (2) more involved activities in which groups calculate recurrence intervals or use dice to explore concepts related to risk when occurrences are essentially random. Bonus activity: donut hole geologic timeline.
