Highs and Lows: The Hand-Twist Model

Tuesday 1:30pm-4:00pm
Share-a-thon Part of Tuesday

Demonstration

This 10–15 minute interactive demonstration introduces the Hand Twist Model, a simple yet powerful kinesthetic tool for teaching the motion of air around high- and low-pressure systems in the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. Using only their hands and a sheet of paper, participants will simulate the effects of the Coriolis force and friction on surface wind patterns, gaining an intuitive understanding of cyclonic and anticyclonic flow. Ideal for K-12 and introductory-level undergraduate instruction, this model offers an accessible way to visualize atmospheric dynamics without specialized equipment. Participants will leave with their drawing, notes about the model, and a copy of the AMS Education lab for this concept.
