EarthScope ANGLE switched to virtual co-instruction of some ANSEP Middle School and High School Academies during the pandemic and then transitioning back to in-person. We have been finding ways to increase ANSEP capacity to include instruction on geologic hazards in both in-person and remote settings.

2023 Kodiak Educators short course

This short course (see Agenda) brings together K-12 teachers from Kodiak and several outlying communities, to learn about using Raspberry Shake seismic sensors for teaching students about earthquakes. Participants learn the basic science of earthquakes, and how seismometers measure Earth movement. Participants receive a Raspberry Shake seismometer, learn how to configure the device, and how to navigate and interpret real-time seismic data using the ShakeNet data portal.

2023 Southeast Alaska Educators short course

Sitka High School, 1000 Lake Street, Sitka AK

This short course (see Agenda) brought together K-12 teachers, Museum Interpreters, and Geology experts from Sitka and Wrangell, to learn about using Raspberry Shake seismic sensors for teaching students about land movements. Participants reviewed the geological hazards of the Sitka area, such as landslides and the Mt. Edgecumbe volcanic center. Participants reviewed how seismometers measure Earth movement. Participants received a Raspberry Shake seismometer, learned how to configure the device, and how to navigate and interpret real-time seismic data using the ShakeNet data portal.

Earthquake-Tsunami-Volcano Science & Preparedness

September 30-October 3, 2022 (Friday-Monday)

This 4-day professional development workshop brought together K-12 educators, parks & museum interpreters, and emergency management and health & safety educators. Participants learn the basic science of earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, EarthScope project, preparedness, and other research efforts to monitor the Earth in Alaska. They explore the topics in a hands-on learning environment and a field trip.

COVID19 NOTICE - February 4, 2022 - The substitute teacher shortage has continued and we are unable to run the workshop in April 2022 as we had hoped. We are now planning for early fall (anticipated September 30-October 3, 2022). It is our intention to hold some sort of an in-person workshop in fall 2022, even if not everyone is able to attend from locations further from Anchorage or if we need to adjust dates so that it only falls on weekend days. We will continue to update you as the situation evolves.

COVID19 NOTICE - May 21, 2021 - Alaska is currently experiencing a significant substitute teacher shortage as a downstream effect of the pandemic. All the major school systems in Alaska have put a hold on teacher absences for things such as professional development, at least into fall 2021. A large number of the ANGLE participants are teachers and none of them would be able to participate. Therefore the planned October 1-4, 2021 workshop will also need to be cancelled. School district plans are currently unclear. We are hoping the workshop will be feasible in April 2022 but it may be that the entire 2021-22 academic year will be affected and we need to push to October 2022. As before all the people who were accepted to the original workshop are still accepted.

COVID19 NOTICE - January 13, 2021 - We regret to inform you that the ANGLE Educator Workshop has been further postponed until October 1-4, 2021. We have contemplated attempting a virtual version of the workshop but have concluded it would not be able to accomplish the project goals. We are optimistic that vaccinations will be sufficiently widespread by late summer 2021 that this latest scheduling will finally be viable. The planned follow-up Share-a-thon, has been rescheduled for March 26, 2022. As before all the people who were accepted to the original workshop are still accepted.

COVID19 NOTICE - September 4, 2020 - We have further postponed this workshop from 2020 to 2021 (anticipating April 2021). All of the people who were accepted to the original workshop are still accepted. New Share-a-thon date will also be determined soon.

COVID19 NOTICE - March 20, 2020 - We have postponed this workshop from April 17-20 to October 2-5, 2020. All of the people who were accepted to the workshop are still accepted. The follow-up Share-a-thon which had been scheduled for February 6, 2021 has been rescheduled for March 27, 2021.

2018 EarthScope ANGLE Stakeholder and Leadership Meetings

The EarthScope ANGLE leadership convened a series of meetings in Anchorage and Kodiak to plan for the three-year project and gather input from rural community members and other stakeholders (from K-12, parks & museums, and emergency management) on how best to structure and aim the ANGLE program to serve their needs. Meetings were by invitation.
