ANSEP Middle School Academies

EarthScope ANGLE switched to virtual co-instruction of some ANSEP Middle School and High School Academies during the pandemic and then transitioning back to in-person. We have been finding ways to increase ANSEP capacity to include instruction on geologic hazards in both in-person and remote settings.

2023 Kodiak Educators short course

October 6-7, 2023
Kodiak High School (room A423), 722 Mill Bay Road, Kodiak AK

This short course (see Agenda) brings together K-12 teachers from Kodiak and several outlying communities, to learn about using Raspberry Shake seismic sensors for teaching students about earthquakes. Participants learn the basic science of earthquakes, and how seismometers measure Earth movement. Participants receive a Raspberry Shake seismometer, learn how to configure the device, and how to navigate and interpret real-time seismic data using the ShakeNet data portal.


2023 Southeast Alaska Educators short course

August 11-12, 2023
Sitka High School, 1000 Lake Street, Sitka AK

This short course (see Agenda) brought together K-12 teachers, Museum Interpreters, and Geology experts from Sitka and Wrangell, to learn about using Raspberry Shake seismic sensors for teaching students about land movements. Participants reviewed the geological hazards of the Sitka area, such as landslides and the Mt. Edgecumbe volcanic center. Participants reviewed how seismometers measure Earth movement. Participants received a Raspberry Shake seismometer, learned how to configure the device, and how to navigate and interpret real-time seismic data using the ShakeNet data portal.

Earthquake-Tsunami-Volcano Science & Preparedness

September 30-October 3, 2022 (Friday-Monday)
UAA Gorsuch Commons, 3700 Sharon Gagnon Lane, Anchorage, AK

This 4-day professional development workshop brought together K-12 educators, parks & museum interpreters, and emergency management and health & safety educators. Participants learn the basic science of earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, EarthScope project, preparedness, and other research efforts to monitor the Earth in Alaska. They explore the topics in a hands-on learning environment and a field trip.

2018 EarthScope ANGLE Stakeholder and Leadership Meetings

February 22 - 26, 2018
ANSEP Building UAA, Anchorage School District, and Kodiak Wildlife Refuge

The EarthScope ANGLE leadership convened a series of meetings in Anchorage and Kodiak to plan for the three-year project and gather input from rural community members and other stakeholders (from K-12, parks & museums, and emergency management) on how best to structure and aim the ANGLE program to serve their needs. Meetings were by invitation.
