Short description: In this workshop, members of a Diversity Working Group (DWG) share processes and tools for identifying, navigating, and modifying persistent structures, policies, and practices that create barriers to STEM education and STEM fields for minoritized communities in Washington State. We will describe frameworks and engage participants with tools that foster ongoing reflection, data gathering, and action planning that can aid students from all backgrounds see a path to becoming a STEM teacher.
Anticipated outcomes for participants: Participants will learn about the Targeted Universalism framework within the context of STEM Education; explore the role of a Landscape Analysis in identifying themes, assets, key figures, programs, policies, practices, and areas of growth; and engage in Journey Mapping and/or Design Clinic exercises.
Workshop Facilitators: Maile Hadley and José M. Rios
Strand B Session 1Short description: Teacher Educators (TEs) will be introduced to a set of rubrics they can use to examine the extent to which their programs reflect research-based components of effective clinically-oriented, practice-based teacher preparation. TEs can also use the rubrics to identify areas in which their programs would like to increase their clinically-oriented and practice-based focus. This rubric contains 35 indicators organized into seven components that operationalize effective clinical practice in TE programs.
Anticipated outcomes for participants: Workshop participants will develop their knowledge of research-based components for clinically-oriented, practice-based teacher preparation programs, as well as a tool that they use to reflect on their programs and plan for improvements.

Short description: Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) is an approach to teaching including content, curriculum and pedagogical knowledge deeply connected to an understanding of student learning and growth. We will illustrate how a PCK approach develops deep skills meeting student needs by an individual teacher as well as a district team through developing inquiry-based pedagogy, integrating culturally responsive teaching, and fostering social emotional competencies. Participants will examine a learning progression of teacher PCK development from recruitment, teacher preparation, early and mid-career stages, to teacher leadership and administration.
Anticipated outcomes for participants: Participants will learn how a PCK approach throughout a career will foster personal, building and district wide excellence in meeting student needs. Participants will leave with progression charts illustrating markers of PCK in practice and strategies for improving PCK throughout the career span.
Workshop developers/facilitators: Julie Antilla-Garza, Jackie Coomes, and John McNamara
Short description: In Washington State, we have created a collaborative model to improve STEM teacher preparation within and across multiple institutions simultaneously. At this workshop, participants will learn about our "NextGen-WA" model and effective collaboration practices. Topics that will be explored include: (a) voices and perspectives that need to be at the table, (b) the importance of creating a shared vision/purpose and a set of achievable goals, (c) developing trust and identifying incentives for individuals to collaborate, (d) addressing policies and practices, and securing resources to support program improvement priorities, and (e) the importance of shared decision-making, norms, and good communications. Participants will also gain access to a variety of resources that support effective collaborations.
Anticipated outcomes for participants: Participants will learn about the benefits of strategically collaborating within and across institutions to support student recruitment, preparation, and success. Participants will also develop a better understanding of how to manage effective collaborations at multiple levels (individual, program, college, institution, cross-institution)
Short description: Participants will learn how Computer Science, Engineering, and Sustainability are being integrated into current STEM teacher preparation programs, courses, and curriculum.
