You Greedy Energy User
Initial Publication Date: September 9, 2009
Summary
This activity involves students in recording their energy usage of particular appliances and devices over a certain period of time. They then take the time and device and determine the kilowatts of electricity used via an internet website. They then can take this value and calculate the amount of fuel that would have to be burned to generate this same amount of electricity. This activity is done for multiple appliances and situations and it is investigated how much fuel/coal is needed to kepp the light on all day every day, or the computer that is never in sleep mode.
[image right border]Learning Goals
The ultimate goal is for students to become aware of their energy consumption. It is meant have studnets carried out calculations using dimensional analysis, practice accountability and record keeping, and think ethically about daily decisions.
Context for Use
A computer lab with access to the internet is needed. A day or two of lead time for students to record data.
Description and Teaching Materials
This lesson is done during a unit on energy/electricity. It is introduced after doing some classwork on electricity generation and some global energy use studies. For closure at the end, as a class we attempt to predict how long easily accessible coal will last and then compare our class values to the scientists predictions. The discussion points then include what things will future scientists need to develope for civilization to be sustained.

Teaching Notes and Tips
STudents do at times have issues going back and forth between the different webpages used. Be sure they know to open two seperate windows so they do not need to keep typing in the address. They also have issues with calculations at times and may need help.
