Summary

This is a unit on fish habitats. It will last for approximately 5 class periods. Some of the activities will include the following: looking at pictures of fish and their habitat, talking about what all animals need to live, how fish live, making a poster of a fish habitat, and finally visiting a lake.

The goal is for the student to know what a fish needs and how they can get it from the place that they live. An additional goal is for the students to have some understanding of how we can affect the habitat of the fish by things that we do or don't do.

Learning Goals

The student will be able to verbally tell me how a fish's habitat provides it with what it needs.

The student will be able to tell me one positive way that we can affect the habitat of fish.

A key concept is that fish need certain things in order to live.

A habitat is a place that provides an animal with its basic needs.

My vocabulary for the unit would be the following: habitat, shelter, and impact.

Context for Use

This lesson is for a Kindergarten, 1st or 2nd grade class. It could be used with any class size. There are various parts to this unit. There is some lecture, some field exercise, and a project too.

Description and Teaching Materials

This unit would be opened with an OKWHL. What do you know about fish? Where do they live? What things do they need?

Secondly, we would look at pictures of fish in their habitat. We would discuss what we see. What sorts of things do you think fish need? What sorts of things do all animals need? There would be guided discussion about how fish get their air, food, etc. We would also discuss what their shelter is. We would go over the first vocabulary word: shelter.
The second day would be spent reviewing the information from the day before. We would introduce the vocabulary word: habitat. What is a fish's habitat made of? How does it provide the fish with food, water, shelter, space, and air? The students will split into groups of two to start talking about how they will develop and create their poster. Days three and four will be spent making a poster that show's a fish's habitat. They should show the teacher their ideas before they get the final paper to draw their poster. They will need to label the things that the fish need to live. They will also need to label the habitat. ex. aquarium, lake, ocean, etc. The final day will be a field trip to a local lake. Before we go I will introduce the final vocabulary word: impact. We will go to the lake and the students will look around and journal a bit before we come back together and talk about what kind of an impact we have on the habitat.
