This is a online summary of research findings on student learning in a first-year seminar on abrupt climate change. The focus of this research was on how students 'stretch' in their learning - how they go beyond their and our expectations as they learn about complex system science and the nature of science. This summary is part of a larger body of work on integrative learning, using methods from the scholarship of teaching and learning, that involved the 2005-2006 cohort of Carnegie Scholars supported by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
