In order to improve his students' study habits and to develop a constructivist, problem-based learning environment, the author made several changes to his introductory biology course. He replaced the textbook reading assignments with more condensed course notes, devised problem-based group activities to be done in class, and developed an assessment system based entirely on two daily quizzes. The first quiz is a conceptual quiz based on the previous day's in-class problem. The second quiz is a knowledge quiz based on the reading for that day's class. Both quizzes are administered at the beginning of class.
