James Mooney

This website provides the personal accounts, in direct quotation, of the Lakota Sioux involved in the massacre at Wounded Knee. The document provides excerpts from the verbatim stenographic report of the council held by delegations of Sioux with the Commissioner of Indian Affairs in Washington on February 11, 1891. Eyewitness accounts are provided by Turning Hawk, Captain Sword, Spotted Horse, and American Horse. The document text is derived from 'The Ghost-dance Religion and the Sioux Outbreak of 1890', written by James Mooney in 1896.
