The Ongoing Educational Anomaly of Earth Science Placement
Paula Messina, Paul Speranza, Ellen Metzger, Phil Stoffer 2003 Journal of Geoscience Education v51 no4 p424-430

This article discusses the unusual problems encountered by instructors of introductory college geology courses: that their courses are expected to be markedly easier than other science courses, and that their students are very poorly prepared for geology by their K-12 education. The authors have developed an introductory Earth system science course and encourage in-service and pre-service teachers to take it. They are working to get geology taught in high schools, preferably as a capstone course, building on earlier biology, chemistry and physics classes.
