"We Need All the Assistance You Have..." part of EarthScope ANGLE:Educational Materials:Activities
This exercise provides a basic introduction to volcanic hazards. Students learn about different types of volcanic hazards through researching examples from Alaskan eruptions. They also group the hazards as proximal and distal to consider how emergency response plans might differ. A recording of the KLM flight 867 flight that lost power to all four engines when it flew into an ash cloud from a 1989 Mt Redoubt eruption provides a compelling example of risk from volcanoes. (Note: the plane was ultimately able to regain enough power to land safely in Anchorage.) Students learn about the Volcano Hazards Alert-Notification System for both ground-based and aviation applications.
Ice Cream Model -- How Glaciers Formed the Minnesota Landscape part of MnSTEP Teaching Activity Collection:MnSTEP Activity Mini-collection
This activity is a teacher demonstration of an ice cream model representing glacier movement across Minnesota. Teacher/student questions and discussion should be encouraged during the demonstration.
Demonstrating Climate Change and the Water Cycle to Fifth Grade Students part of NAGT:Our Resources:Teaching Resources:Teaching Materials Collection
Demonstration of the greenhouse effect and its role in climate change, discussion of the phases of water and the water cycle, and a hands-on experiment to investigate the role of temperature in phase changes of ...
Investigating Earth Changes-Looking at Weathering and Erosion part of MnSTEP Teaching Activity Collection:MnSTEP Activity Mini-collection
In this classroom activity students will learn about changes that occur in the earth's surface by investigating the process of weathering and erosion. Through interactive lectures and experiments students will understand how weathering and erosion take place and change the earth.
Watersheds Urban and Rural part of MnSTEP Teaching Activity Collection:MnSTEP Activity Mini-collection
Students build a model of a watershed, apply water to the model, and explore what happens when elements of the watershed are changed.
Ocean Acidification/Acid Rain Demonstration with a Soda Stream part of Teach the Earth:Teaching Activities
Using a SodaStream or other household carbonation appliance to teach about acidification and its effects on the environment.
Investigation erosion in our world part of MnSTEP Teaching Activity Collection:MnSTEP Activity Mini-collection
This activity is a field investigation where students go out to a water source and observe erosion that has taken place.
Erosion in our World part of MnSTEP Teaching Activity Collection:MnSTEP Activity Mini-collection
This activity is a field investigation where students observe evidence of erosion and deposition in the schoolyard or designated area.
High and Low Pressure part of MnSTEP Teaching Activity Collection:MnSTEP Activity Mini-collection
This activity is a hands on lesson where students will explore high and low air pressure.
Investigating Macroinvertebrates: How Clean is Our Lake? part of MnSTEP Teaching Activity Collection:MnSTEP Activity Mini-collection
This 3-part lesson begins with a field activity beside a lake or stream where students collect and identify macro invertebrates. During the second and third portions of the lesson, students conduct research to answer questions that they have regarding the macro invertebrates that they have identified and then based on the types of macro invertebrates found make a general determination of the cleanliness of the lake.
Investigating Starch in Foods part of MnSTEP Teaching Activity Collection:MnSTEP Activity Mini-collection
This activity is a classroom experiment where students gather data on which foods contain starch. They use observation and develop their own hypothesis to create a question they would like to discover about starches.
Calculating the declination of the sun for elementary students part of MnSTEP Teaching Activity Collection:MnSTEP Activity Mini-collection
Students will observe the patterns of apparent motion of the sun using simple tools.
The Science of Puddles part of MnSTEP Teaching Activity Collection:MnSTEP Activity Mini-collection
This activity is a field investigation of puddles where students gather data and record their findings.
Chlorine Chemistry: A Building Block of Matter part of MnSTEP Teaching Activity Collection:MnSTEP Activity Mini-collection
This activity provides a demonstration and lab exploration of one of the main "building blocks" of the periodic table of elements: chlorine. During the lab, students compare physical and chemical properties of chlorine compounds.
Food Chains: Nature's Restaurant part of MnSTEP Teaching Activity Collection:MnSTEP Activity Mini-collection
In these life science activities, students will participate in field observations of living things & do research of animals they observe to create a food chain & present it to the class. Students will participate in a food web simulation game.
