Physical Geology

In the first few pages of most Earth history texts, students are formally introduced to the idea of uniformity of process: that the laws or principles of nature have not changed through time. So, if an ancient cinder cone resembles the one we observe growing on an active, monitored volcano, we as geologists assume that the ancient cone is the result of past volcanic activity, using the present to explain the past.
