Using FLIPGRID in Your Online Classroom

This page is authored by Angela K Thurman, Tarrant County College, Fort Worth, Texas, based on her personal experience using FlipGrid

Summary

What if there was an easy and free way to increase student/instructor interaction in online courses? There is!! Let me introduce you to FLIPGRID. Flipgrid is a free video tool that can easily be embedded into your course or you can use a hyperlink that allows students to log in using their campus email and create a short video on any theme you choose. These videos are excellent as introductory videos or if you would like a "live" presentation or answer to a question. Students can view each others videos and comment, if you allow that option. I find that students are so used to posting on Instagram and Snapchat that using Flipgrid is a super easy and natural way for them to introduce their personalities into online courses.

Learning Goals

Flipgrid can be used in many ways, this example shows Flipgrid being used in lieu of a typical "Introductory Discussion Board" as a way to increase student/instructor interaction in an online classroom.

Context for Use

Flipgrid is appropriate for all education levels, class sizes and institution types. Use can be modified to fit individual courses. Videos can be capped in length- I use a max of 90 seconds. Equipment needed- smart phone or computer with a camera with access to the internet. This is a very easy skill to master and most students will find this to be a very easy exercise.

Description and Teaching Materials

I post the link in my Discusion Board section, as the Intro Video- I cant send the videos of my students due to privacy issues but this is how I post it:

(The link takes them directly to the Flipgrid course that I have already set up(

Teaching Notes and Tips

*Set the sign in for FlipGrid to your institutional email to eliminate anyone other than students from logging in
*You can assign each section to a different Flipgrid access code or give all students the same code if you wish
*Make an intro video of your own as a "Welcome message" that the students can see when they log into Flipgrid

Assessment

I use this activity as the required initial lesson to verify student enrollment and class participation. I offer options for students who do not wish to film themselves- they can only tape audio while filming something else (like a pet), or they can tape audio while filming their surroundings. Not participating at all in not an option.
