Evaluating Student Work in Cases
- Don't feel you need to place great grading weight on how much students participate in the case. You may instead stress attendance and preparation. Perhaps the amount of participation can be used to decide "bubble grades" at the end of the term.
- Put a few questions on the exam that relate to the case discussion. This can underscore the value of the case without adding to your grading burden.
- Assign post-case papers. This may level the playing field for the "non-talkers."
- Have students gather and share additional case information. In addition, ask them to briefly (one paragraph) write a justification for why they think the information they found will be useful for the case discussion. Then you can assess their contribution and reasoning.
- Have students write cases. After participating in several cases, students can prepare case materials. Consistent and effective participation in the case will prepare students to better compose cases on their own. These case mateirals can be assessed just like any other project.
