Tutorials and Examples of Digital Field Mapping Exercises from the University of Kansas, from Doug Walker

  1. Resources for Using Arcview 3.2 ( 5.8MB Jul22 07)
    a. All of the necessary files are included in the above zip file to go through the tutorial using Arcview 3.2.
    • The FCGC folder is an Arc/Info coverage. It is the geologic contacts for the area near Ridgecrest, CA, taken from the 1:250,000 Trona map. The folder contains all the needed files for an Arc/Info coverage. The folder is itself the collection of data needed for this coverage.
    • The FCGR folder is an Arc/Info coverage. It is the geologic rock units for the area near Ridgecrest, CA, taken from the 1:250,000 Trona map. The folder contains all the needed files for an Arc/Info coverage. The folder is itself the collection of data needed for this coverage.
    • WESTLAWR.TIF is a registered map for the area west of Lawrence Kansas.
    • rScan7.tif and rScan7.tifw are the image and georeferencing file (world coordinate file) for a geologic map of the southwestern Arica Mountains, CA. This is used in the geologic map digitizing exercise.
    • GeoEditor.avx is an Avenues script used in geologic mapping for Arcview 3.2.
    • The INFO folder contains database items used by the Arc/Info coverages.
    b. To access these files you need to save them to disk on the computer containing Arcview 3.2. The Geoeditor.avx needs to be placed into the extension folder under Arcview 3.2.
  2. Resources for Using ArcDemo 9.2 ( 347kB Jul22 07)
    a. All of the necessary files are included in the above zipfile to go through the tutorial using ArcGIS 9.2.

    • GeoMapper91-2007 is the geodatabase used for mapping in ArcGIS9.2.
    • The INFO folder contains database items used by the Arc/Info coverages.

  3. Geodatabase for the ArcGIS 9.2 Suite ( 371kB Jul8 07)
This zip folder contains a geodatabase for the ArcGIS 9.2 suite. Also included are excel tables for each of the domains (controlled vocabulary) used in the geodatabase. These can be edited in excel and then imported into the geodatabase using the "table to domain" command in the tool box. Note, you must have sufficient licensing to use this command (it works in the full ArcInfo mode as well as stand-alone ArcEditor mode). You have to import the domains into an empty geodatabase as the domains are locked if there is data in it already.
