Added Revision3 Data Tools Investigation Planning and Documentation Template Part I and Part II as an attached file. Plus added Extension file of students work.
Data Tools Investigation Planning and Documentation Template Part I and Part II as an attached file. Links are provided to the BBC movie used in the introduction and to the triptych of pictures used of the Aral Sea. The introductory PowerPoint contains the links to the gathered information, pictures, used, and additional informational websites. The files attached here are of the pictures used for the ImageJ measurements as well as the QT movie used in the PowerPoint made in ImageJ for the Aral Sea Stack Animation. If you adapt the PowerPoint for your own use you will need to redirect the animated stack location.

This post was editted by Anne Marie Levesque on Mar, 2009 These are the Files used for Part 2 of the Pizza Lesson. Using ImageJ to measure a series of pictures over time and determine each pictures loss of area, then to use the stacking feature to see the animated loss of area over time as the scientists did with the study of the Aral Sea. Hence the students were taking the procedural steps scientists would take to use ImageJ to study area measurement over time.

What a cool way to tie science and math together. I think I may copy this lesson and give it to the math teacher on my team.
Getting the kids to see how geometry is related to real life is often difficult.

This post was editted by Anne Marie Levesque on Mar, 2009 Thanks! I thought so too and that is where I will go with the extension of the lesson. Measurement of Area as triangular slices are removed and then I'll go back to Imagej and have the students animate the pictures into a stack to illustrate the animation process of Imagej again that was used by scientists when studying the loss of Aral Sea over time with Imagej. I will post those pictures here if you want to use them and include the animated .gif and .mov that you should end up with.

Nice lesson. It is really good for the kids to see how a tool (Inage J) can be used in many ways. I think our lessons comnplimented each other and gave the kids more confidence in using the software. Hopefully we can do more of this.

Anne Marie,
Very impressive use of power point and ImageJ! I loved your lesson and I think the students will understand the science so much better using these tools. Great job.
