Tutorials

Tuesday afternoon, from 3-4 PM, you may choose to attend a tutorial offered by another participant, in which you will have small group practice time with a model, tool or visualization that you would like to learn how to use. Here are the tutorial options:

  • Room 905-09: How to create and use Google Earth datasets (Glenn Richard) & Google Earth and structural geology (Charlie Onasch)
As a follow-up to this activity, I would like to work with interested parties to identify means of using Google Earth and other software tools to enable students to explore complex real world Earth system problems from a cross-disciplinary perspective. This would necessitate identifying useful examples of existing datasets, and creating new ones, that can used together to explore interrelationships between various parts of the Earth system, including the human component. (Glenn Richard)
    • Room 903: How my colleagues and I assessed student learning with tools, visualizations, and data sets in my project Data Sets and Inquiry in Geoscience Education (DIGS) (PowerPoint 2.5MB Feb12 08) on the topics climate change and crustal plate boundaries. (Dan Zalles)
I'd like to know how others have done this, too.
    • Geology Building, Room 245: Making Dynamic Digital Maps (Chris Condit)
    • Room 163C: Developing GeoWall content with the Visualization Tool Kit (VTK) (Chuck Anderson)
    • Room 917: Using the GeoMapApp software (GeoMapApp is an integral part of MARGINS mini-lessons and some Earth Exploration Toolkit chapters) (Andrew Goodwillie)
    • Room 163C: Creation and implementation of original GIS-based undergraduate curricula (Mark Abolins)
Ideally, I'd like to recruit collaborators who will continue to work with me on the development and implementation of curricula meeting their specific needs, and I have a small amount of funding (including travel $) from NASA to make this happen.
    • Room 904-08 Using the Fledermaus free viewer and software, a 3D visualization package primarily used in ocean mapping (Matthew Arsenault and Erin Heffron)
    • Room 163C or 915: IDV data viewer (Stuart Wier)
