This report from the National Research Council summarizes the research base for what is known about teacher preparation in the United States and proposes a research agenda to fill in gaps in that knowledge. Chapters cover preparing teachers in different subjects, addressing four questions: (1) What do successful students know about X?, (2) What instructional opportunities are necessary to support successful students?, (3) What do successful teachers know about X and teaching X?, and (4) What instructional opportunities are necessary to support successful teachers?
