Benefits of Undergraduate Research Experiences

The authors conducted a survey of over 7000 people in the STEM and social and behavioral science disciplines, about half of whom had been involved in undergraduate research. They found that these experiences helped clarify their interests in science and their understanding of the scientific process, and that no particular method was favored, but enthusiasm and early exposure is important.
