Martin A. Schwartz, Journal of Cell Science

This brief article describes how facing our ignorance (which makes many people feel stupid) is fundamental to making scientific discoveries. It suggests that science educators help students to make the transition from studying other people's discoveries to facing the unknown and trying to make sense of it. In particular, the author recommends that we make an effort to show students how hard it really is to do original research and to show them how to confront ignorance productively.
