Haney Rand, TRENDS in Ecology and Evolution, Elsevier Ltd.
This 2004 review article published in TRENDS in Ecology and Evolution discusses the possible role of co-evolution during endosymbiosis and organelle evolution. The authors outline the theories of co-evolution and co-adaptation, and critically examine several cases/datasets that have been presented as evidence for co-adaptation between host/nuclear and endosymbiont/organelle genomes. A brief glossary defines several technical terms, but a solid background in cell biology and molecular evolution are necessary to fully appreciate the authors' arguments. Thus, this resource would be most appropriate for advanced undergraduate or graduate students.
