Field Notes
D. W. Mogk 1997 Mineralogical Society of America, Washington, DC Teaching Mineralogy p47-51

This article introduces the concept of "novelty space" and emphasizes that students' learning is impaired if they are 1) uncertain about their geologic and geographic setting, 2) not clear about what tasks they are expected to do or what the outcomes should look likem and 3) concerned about their personal safety and comfort. Pre-field trip preparations can significantly decrease this novelty space so students are well-prepared to engage field experiences to promote learning and positive attitudes about the activity.
