The Interdisciplinary Imperative
G. Bugliarello 1999 Pennsylvania State University International Conference on Interdisciplinary Imperative

Interdisciplinarity creates new knowledge and uses of knowledge across boundaries of disciplines and institutions. Beyond this, it is an instrument of integration of the uses of knowledge, providing new understandings, methods, and paradigms. When it is very successful, interdisciplinarity has a revolutionary, rather than evolutionary, impact on knowledge. The author asserts that we should pursue interdisciplinarity aggressively and systematically to make the most of this opportunity to expand knowledge.
