The Ecology of Learning: Several Streams of Research Take a Broad Approach to Understanding the Learning Process

This article describes two streams of educational research. One examines how elements of the environment support or impede learning; the other considers the development of expertise in a field to go beyond mastery of content knowledge to include ways of thinking, interpreting, and knowing practiced by professionals in that field. The author continues by describing how the results of this research can be used to improve teaching and learning.
