This lab activity provides students with the opportunity to investigate permeability and porosity in a simple groundwater system. Gravel and sand are the primary materials used for observation and comparison of flow rates. Students observe, take measurements, answer questions, draw diagrams, plot data, and define terms such as aquifer and aquiclude. Mathematical concepts of volume and flow rate are integrated into this activity. This activity was developed for intermediate elementary students, but vocabulary, mathematics, and comparison of multiple variables are better suited for middle school students.
