This site contains information about the Mars Exploration Rovers. The explorers, two robotic rovers designed and built by NASA, were launched toward Mars in June and July of 2003. They landed in January 2004, on opposite sides of the planet: the rover Spirit in a surface feature called Gusev Crater, and the rover Opportunity in a large crater called Meridiani Planum. Both rovers are equipped with sophisticated tools for photographing, grinding, and analyzing Martian rocks. Basically, they are geologists on wheels. One of the primary missions of the explorers was to look for signs of liquid water. The types of positive evidence found are described in detail on this page. There are links to four related essays, sites for more information, six photographs or interactives, and a video about how the rovers got there.
