This report covers the evolution of thought and interest surrounding this planet, the aims and objectives of Martian exploration, the curiosity and search for Martian life and the development of exobiology as a science. Details about specific experiments and missions are given, beginning with the trials and tribulations of getting spacecraft into space, the 1960-1967 Voyager project problems, creation of the Viking spacecraft, planning for the Viking Orbiter, scientists involved, landing site selection, spacecraft construction, and tasks performed by the Viking on Mars.
