This article explores the effect of global warming and El Nino on the unusual weather that was experienced in the United States in the winter of 2006-07. It points out that global warming is likely raising background temperatures, but El Nino was probably responsible for atypically warm weather in the midwestern and northeastern United States and Europe. It also explains how the El Nino phenomenon was discovered, what causes these events, and how they affect weather in areas of the world far removed from the Pacific Ocean, where they occur.
