This Why Files article explores the debate on global warming. Topics discussed are: is global warming good or bad, the greenhouse effect, how stable have past climates been, and what are effects of deforestation. Global warming is thought to cause rising sea levels, droughts, and fires that disturb agriculture, economies, and ecosystems alike. In the late 1990's the Earth experienced 18 months of record temperatures. Some think the ongoing heat wave is the long-sought "signal" of global warming. However, a few don't find evidence that the Earth is warming. Four scientists were interviewed for this article.
