The Minnesota Microprobe Remote Access Project is an initiative that allows real-time access to an electron microprobe using a standard World Wide Web browser. This project gives students, educators, and the broader scientific community access to this state-of-the-art instrument for both teaching and research purposes. The remote access system is especially useful for students because it permits them to interact with an electron microprobe and observe the tasks performed by lab personnel. For example, students in a petrology class can view backscatter-electron images of a particular sample, ask for specific points to be analyzed, and immediately see the resulting spectrum of characteristic X-rays. The site also presents some interesting examples of how microprobe analysis is used in industry.
