This article points out the need to design graphics so that they effectively convey the information that they are intended to. The authors point out the difficulties of designing color graphics that convey meaning to individuals with color-deficient vision. As an example, they compare two different visualizations of a data set (one using a Spectral Color Scale and one using a 2-Hue Diverging Color Scale) with simulations of what they both look like to people with one of the most common types of color-deficient vision. The authors provide recommendations for improving color schemes while accomodating color-deficient vision.
