A standard optimal detection approach to patterns of change in temperature extremes was applied to analyze extreme temperatures and their dependence on external forces. Results show that since 1950, the warmest nights and coldest days and nights of the year have heated by about 1 Kelvin. Based on this study, the authors expect that extreme temperatures will intensify, possibly by 7 Kelvin over the next hundred years.
