Statistical Mechanics for secondary school: The GasLab Multi-agent Modeling Toolkit
U. Wilensky 2003 International Journal of Computers for Mathematical Learning. Special Issue on agent-based modeling.
This paper presents case studies of the design and exploration of computer-based models of statistical mechanical phenomena. The cases lead the authors to analyze and discuss the role of model-based inquiry in science and mathematics education as well as to draw general conclusions regarding the design of modeling languages, pedagogies, and activities appropriate for model-based inquiry in classroom settings. The creation and use of GasLab, a set of NetLogo models of gas molecules in a box, is also discussed.
